Kit Kaplan > He’s even sensitive in his sleep. My wife and I had 5 blissful years without even a fight and this year illness and financial problems caused a period of fighting that didn’t seem to end. When Elijah slept with us he stayed between us and was as hyper active in sleep as when awake. He would sleep diagonally or perpendicular to us with a hand or foot smashing us in the face during the night. He moved every few minutes and as he grew, the bed shrank and we got less and less sleep.

One morning around 4 am after a foot in the side of my head and a fist in Seana’s belly, we were just looking at him and realized that he was so important to us and if we lost our home and our wonderful “Grandma station wagon” we love (and it looked like we would), we would still have him. We would still have each other.

We held hands over him and let the frustrations drift out of us and as we did Elijah went parallel and snuggled in between us. He slept peacefully from then on.

He is a healer and an entertainer too. He lives in a house with 3 big bosomed women, 2 over 50 who rarely wear a bra. Recently, he rubbed the perky bosom on his Power Ranger girl figure and asked “Grandma, why are the boobs so high? They should be around her waist.”

He sometimes knows things. Like the time he asked Seana to write the “symbols” on him. My wife is a Reiki Master and has often done touch Reiki on him which he loves but she has never told him about the Sanskrit symbols written on the body. So, she wrote the symbols on his back and he said, “Yea, that’s it.”

I am visually and metaphysically gifted and I always hoped my grandson would be bright. I first knew he was when I opened my eyes one morning at the touch of his finger on my arm. I had a bloody scab and he woke me up to ask about it. I expected, “Boo boo, Nana?” But instead he said, “Do you have a mosquito bite? Do you feel well? Do you need to go to the doctor?” He was not yet 2 years old.

Ok. My wife is a humble intellectual who uses words like “cantankerous”, “debacle” and “aplomb” without snootiness and he’s used to big words. The real revelation came for me when I read about how you should not demand that smart kids behave, but explain why.

So when the terrible two’s seemed to possess this delightful child and he began to shut doors on me and say, “I hate you” we had a talk.

I reminded him of the day we were playing karate and I called him a baby and he cried. I explained that it hurt his feelings and when he is mean to me, it hurts mine and I cry. He was shocked and deeply upset to think he had hurt me and from that day he became my knight, protecting my feelings from the family, telling my daughter not to hurt my feelings and my wife to be nicer.

He brings me coffee in bed and once he peeked into the bathroom to caress my elbow, one of his favorite places, saying, “I know you need private, but I just wanted to say I love you.”
Kit Kaplan > One Friday we sat around having what we call “Family Time” which means a fire in the living room or popcorn in bed and a video. Friday night to me is Shabbat though we have never called it that. We were watching Anastasia for the 8th or 9th time and were crying as Anastasia is reunited with her grandmother. The cat was sleeping on Seana’s legs. Nothing unusual. Suddenly Elijah began to bounce up and down and do slips and hand stands yelling, “Shaboom, Shabbat, Shaboom, Shabbat.” At the time he went to an African American school deep in Queens and his teacher had no idea where he would learn this. We had never talked about it and all his TV was supervised.

It is another mystery and I often ask him where he learns things and he says, “I just know them.” He’s as mystified as we are by it. For a while I obsessed on whether he was an Indigo child like I am but he is way too happy. We thought he must be a crystalline child – here to heal the universe and raise its consciousness. Wow, what a lot to put on a 3 year old.

I am a minister and applying to a Seminary to study psychic sciences so I asked the school’s founder – a world renown psychic who works for the UN – about him. She cautioned me not to label him. She said all kids are born with gifts and they will develop them if encouraged and shrivel up if criticized or discouraged. Very simple. More kids are being encouraged today so more of them are gifted.

Elijah turned 3 recently so talking like an adult seems less impressive but I have to remember not many kids can crack eggs without getting shells in them or scramble eggs by themselves. Not many will tell you, “Stay away, Nana. I stink! I need my diaper changed but I know you have poop-a-phobia. Why don’t you have pee-a-phobia?”
