This place reminds me of when my stepdad (whom I miss so much) used to buy his bait, before a day of fishing. One time we were on the docks, he caught a big one, along with the other fish he had in a pail. I went to take a look and one jumped out at me! I cried, I wasn't a girl to be surrounded by fish. I'd prefer candy and dolls. But that made my parents laugh..and to hear them laugh one more time if possible would be a blessing. I miss them both and glad I have such a nice memory. And it's this picture that brought it back.
Thank you!

They have definitely got the best hero sub in town. In the summer Caroline at the counter slicing salami and provolone. I went in one day to get some beer to bring over to the scooter shop where I get my bike fixed and she spent a lot of time fussing over how I would carry the beer on my scooter instead of just sending me out the door. In the cooler months her mother runs the shop but once it gets hot, she goes upstairs to her air-conditioned apartment and won’t come down until fall.

In August of 1963, Dimitria and her husband came from Greece and opened their little dream restaurant. Forty-one years later they are still here. I spent an hour or so enjoying a cream soda at the counter and watching Dee’s knarled, water-soaked hands skillfully make sandwiches. She is camera-shy and reluctant to talk to me at first.

“My name? They call me Dee. I don’t even remember my name. Oh yes, Dimitira. We’ve been here for 41 years and never closed one day. Not one. Well, maybe a half day in an emergency.”

The neighborhood is mostly Italian and Dee knows every customer’s name and what they order. the prices are pretty much the same as when they opened.
